After looking around the IAM market a bit for a new place to call home, I got introduced to Identropy by a friend. He had nothing but good things to say about the company, and right from the get go I was able to see why he liked working there so much. I’m glad to have become a member of the community here and I’m looking forward to my future working with Identropy.

Thinking about it I realize that I have been involved with Identity Management for most of my career, and not always intentionally, but hey, that’s ok, I like it.  I come from a software development background and love it when I get a chance to get all “technical”, but mostly spend my time helping our Professional Services clients be successful.

I’ve been in the identity space for most of my career, and I’m still passionate about it. Anyhow, a CTO is supposed to be the person who sets technical vision for the company, but honestly – Identropy has way too much brainpower for a single person to do that. Instead, I get my hands dirty with the customer development process, lend a helping hand wherever its needed, and I have the privilege to talk identity with some of the brightest minds in this space every day.

I started my professional career building and working with robots. When my plans to start the robot uprising toward world domination fell through, I turned to software consulting. For the past  decade, I have spent my time working closely with clients across the globe helping them navigate the dangerous waters of Identity and Access Governance. Prior to becoming an Identropian, I was the VP of Global Services for Courion Corporation where I built and ran a successful global professional services operation.

The thing that excites me most about Identropy is being able to help customers solve their most complex business problems through a mix of strategic vision, best-in-class technologies, and transformational consulting.

I believe my passion for the IT industry actually blossomed during my first career out of college: hazardous waste management.  The regulatory compliance needs of that industry quickly challenged my organizational skills and I realized I needed to up the ante to avoid drowning in a sea of paperwork.  But working for a small company, there was no concept of an IT department to turn to.

So armed with books on MS Access/VB6 and an understanding of what I hoped to accomplish, I created a number of databases and supporting applications that bridged the gap, although in hindsight those early database designs were not ones I would admit to authoring today.  Combining that interest and additional formal training, my second career was launched and opened the doorway to assisting companies navigate the complexities of implementing IAM solutions.  During my free time I enjoy skiing, tennis and vacations with the family.

I got my first computer for Christmas in 1985—an IBM PC jr, complete with battery powered wireless keyboard, which was pretty cool for 1985. I was addicted to MS Flight Simulator 1.0 and SubLogic’s Jet —the first F-16/18 flight simulator—as well as learning BASIC and coding my own (very basic) games.

In high-school, I was a sullen art-room/punk-rock kid. I loved technology but I loved music, drawing and writing more. Since art and tech weren’t ready to meet and have a baby yet, I ended up getting my BA in English. What does one do with an English degree in the early 90s? Work at a bookstore of course. It was at a small bookstore in Western, MA where I was asked by the owners if I might be able to figure out how to build one of them “website-thingies” for the store. I borrowed some HTML books and fired up my 486dx and started banging out HTML in notepad. Art and technology had finally met, and I’d found a way to incorporate writing, art and technology. I’ve been hooked ever since.

As I learned more, I realized that using technology to make things work faster or better or more efficiently was an art form in and of itself. I love how solving problems and designing solutions with technology puts me “in the zone” like writing and drawing did as a teenager.

I started out in the Finance area and was the New England Divisional Controller of Corporate Express Office Supplies where I was also the Divisional HR Director. After deeply being involved in 8 acquisitions at Corporate Express in under a year I decided to change my career path.

I joined Cambridge Technology Partners* which was acquired Novell* and left to join Courion*

I have been in the IAM space for about 15 years working as Business Analyst, Project Manager, Program Manager, Solution Delivery Manager, Director of Services and now Client Partner.

I am based out of my home in Danvers MA and will be practice cross functional with the goal of working with the Identropy teams and Clients to ensure successful IAM implementations

That is the reality of what I have and am doing – my dream was to be an international spy. I took an abundance of language classes in both undergrad, post graduate college and to date am not fluent in any language with maybe the exception of English. I am still working on the spy skills.

I started programming in the 80’s, when my mother brought home a TI-84 (Texas Instrument) and told me that if I wanted to play one of “those games”, I had to type it in myself first and learn how it worked.  I cursed her then, but thank her daily now!  I have worn a number of IT hats over the years, going back and forth from programmer to analyst, working with a number of systems and platforms, originally in the Casino Gaming world, until I moved to the Financial/Banking world and began working with the SailPoint product in 2010 and I haven’t looked back since.  I love the product, and the IAM world, with all it’s challenges, nuances and gray areas.

Outside of work, I am an avid kayaker and camper/survivalist, who loves nightlife and the city lights.  Each weekend is a toss-up between the backwoods with no cell signal, renovating a house, or an adventure in any number of cities.  I live by the “Work hard, play hard” motto, and I pride myself on my attention to detail and drive to get the job done right, so I can hang my hat up and go “play” outside knowing that my work is done and stands for itself.  I am ecstatic to have found a like-minded group of people with Identropy, and look forward to the challenges, laughs, and successes in store for us.

Since joining Identropy, I’ve enjoyed helping the company grow through its Professional Services, its Managed Services, and all of the the general bootstrapping that a young company required. I’m very passionate about technology, and one of the best things about startups is having the flexibility (sometimes out of necessity) to find innovative ways to apply technology to solve problems. I’m also very passionate about food, and thankfully, equally love to cook. If you ever start a conversation with me about food or tech, you’ll have me talking to you all night.

This mission isn’t about me. Never has, never will.  Instead, it’s all about the Identropy team and how we collaborate and combine our knowledge and vision to revolutionize the Identity and Access Management industry. This mission is also about our clients (whom we call our partners). Each and every one of our partners invests and believes in the Identropy team and we owe it to them to understand what their pain points and requirements are, so that we can collectively determine the best solution and deliver it in a timely, cost effective, and innovative fashion. So even though I technically represent Identropy in a sales oriented capacity, my job role and responsibility is to do whatever is needed to achieve the mission of Identropy.

I was almost 30 years old by the time I figured out what I wanted to be when I grow up.  Ever since I got my TRS 80 Color Computer as a child, I knew I wanted to work with computers.  In school I was led to believe that I could either be an engineer or a consultant.  The former was too technical; the latter not technical enough.  Finally I learned about Professional Services and found it to be the perfect balance of consulting and technology.

Working as a system administrator for a town government with a shoestring budget taught me the importance of efficient, repeatable business processes, and automation.  Graduate school formalized those lessons.  I see my career as the logical next step of applying what I learned to help businesses improve and automate their processes.

Prior to joining Identropy I dedicated ten plus years of my professional life to making customers successful with Identity and Access Management solutions from CA Technologies and Quest / Dell Software. In those roles, my ability to assist customers was limited by the solutions I represented. As Identropy’s Director of Business Development I have the opportunity to provide broader and deeper value to our clients. Our advisory and managed services practices and our vendor agnostic stance allow us to deliver value that goes beyond success with a particular product. Helping customers build their IAM program, select a vendor that is best suited for their needs and then helping them run their program is tremendously rewarding.

If there is one thing that I have learned in my time here on Earth it is that my eyes are much larger than my stomach. I continue to work on remedying that each and every day by cooking and eating in a seemingly endless cycle. When I am not involved with food I find myself engaged in conversations with like minded technology professionals discussing the merits of dogs, zombies, IAM, motorcycles, and, of course, food.
